Highlights of the tour:

  • «Relax in comfort as you make your way north. Enjoy morning tea at Owen see the freshly painted silos titled, “From wheat bags to sand bags”, depicting the local farmers transition in work during WW1.
  • «Stop at Laura in the Southern Flinders Ranges region and enjoy a light lunch including some Golden North ice cream.
  • «Continue north to the Flinders Ranges and visit the ruins of Kanyaka Station, once a busy cattle and sheep station with over 70 families living and working there.  It was eventually abandoned due to severe droughts.
  • «Continue on to Orroroo to the site of the Giant Redgum tree with a circumference of 10.4 meters and estimated to be 500 years old.
  • «Travel out of town to the Goyders Line Memorial, erected in honour of George Woodroffe Goyder the surveyor and explorer.
  • «Arrive at Rawnsley Park Station and enjoy dinner in the Woolshed Restaurant, while looking at the  beautiful Flinders Ranges through the floor to ceiling windows.  It is a short 200 metre stroll from the rooms.
  • «Tour further north, stop at Blinman, the highest surveyed town in South Australia. Perhaps grab some morning tea at the local bakery.
  • «Stop at Parachilna, a remote outback town and home of the famous Prairie Hotel. See the old railway line that took The Ghan train to Alice Springs and the unusual iron sculptures near the hotel and old railway line.
  • «Visit Aroona Dam, which once supplied water to Leigh Creek and then tour through the once thriving coal mining town and see how well laid out the town is. Drive onto Copley and experience a real remote outback town. We will have a light lunch here before pushing on with our final leg of today’s journey.
  • «Arrive at Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, in the remote Flinders Ranges, your accommodation for the next two nights.
  • «Depart on your Arkaroola 4WD Ridgetop Tour. This is the oldest part of the Flinders Ranges, much of it granite, but it also includes some even more ancient sedimentary rock that was laid down nearly 1600 million years ago. There are several lookout stops along the route on this 4.5 hour tour, which includes morning tea at Sillers lookout. This tour is a HIGHLIGHT but can be very rough as you are sitting in the back of a specially constructed 4WD and travelling over rough roads and tracks.
  • «Enjoy a light lunch at Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary before having free time in the afternoon to relax, go for a bush walk or swim, or take in one of the other tours or scenic flights (at your own expense) offered by Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary.
  • «See the lovely little yellow-footed rock-wallabies come down from the hills for their evening feed provided by the staff at Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary.
  • «Board the coach and travel back to Blinman via a different outback road. Travel across dry river beds that can swell to gushing torrents in a matter of minutes once there is train in the area.
  • «Spend some time in Blinman to purchase your own lunch and browse the little visitor information centre and souvenir shop.
  • «Stop at Hucks lookout and admire the stunning panoramic view of the Flinders Ranges and Wilpena Pound.
  • «See the Cazneaux Tree, a river gum on the west side of Flinders Ranges Way, made famous by Harold Cazneaux the photographer.
  • «Visit the Jeff Morgan Gallery at Hawker and see his amazing Wilpena Panorama which captures the essence of Wilpena and the Flinders Ranges. The panorama is 3.5 metres (11ft) high and 33 metres (98ft) in circumference.
  • «Arrive at Standpipe Motel Pt Augusta, your accommodation for the night, and settle in before enjoying a two-course dinner in their dining room.
  • «Board the coach and travel to the seaside towns of Pt Broughton and Fisherman’s Bay, 5kms to the north, both popular in school holiday time. Check out the fish-themed streets of Fisherman’s Bay.
  • «Stop and see the beautiful silo art at the tiny town of Bute, which was the original site of the Yorke Peninsula Field Days way back in 1895.
  • «Lunch will be at the lovely old Rising Sun Hotel at Pt Wakefield with it’s stunning seafarer mural on the side.
  • «As we make our way home we will pop into the beach town of Pt Parham, once historically known as Dublin Beach, and in it’s day, a shipping port for grain to Pt Adelaide from the Northern Plains. Hard to imagine with such little water normally there.
